Summer camps can be an enjoyable experience for kids and
parents alike, especially when the camp teaches the children valuable skills and
encourages them to grow, develop and mature.
At Timberlane Athletic Club, the sports camps for children
aged three to 14 run all summer. Bill Maron, Head Tennis Pro at Timberlane and
the summer camp organizer, has developed a number of different camps based on sport
and age. “We have a Sportball camp for the munchkins, the three- to five-year
olds, and then for the 6-to-14-year olds we have a tennis camp, a sports camp
and a golf and tennis camp. And then for our higher level tennis players, kids
who have actually competed a fair bit, we have a high performance tennis camp.”
The programs run all summer long, most starting at the end
of June and run right up to when school starts in early September. “A few of
the camps begin just in July, like our golf and tennis camp, but we offer at
least eight weeks of each camp and 11 weeks for some of them,” Maron explains.
Additionally, both a tennis camp and a high-performance tennis
camp, as well at the Sportball camp for the younger crowd, are offered over the
March Break.
Maron believes the biggest benefit to kids attending
Timberlane sports camps is the counselors. Hired and trained as role models for
the kids, their goal is to teach the campers life values through sport. “We
really encourage our staff to motivate the children to try to improve, to give
full effort and…we want them to challenge themselves.” The result is a positive
learning experience from which each child will benefit.
At Timberlane they’re aware that sending the kids off to
camp each day can be a daunting task for parents, which is why they have the
counselors phone each parent the week before camp starts to go over a checklist
of what the children need to bring, answer any questions the parents may have,
and put them at ease.
Fortunately, food is one thing parents won’t have to worry
about. Timberlane offers campers both morning and afternoon snacks, as well as
a full lunch.
“We partnered with a company called Sensational Sweets last
summer and they took care of all our food.” Maron admits that by the name you
may think they only provide sweet foods, but he insists the company pays “a
great deal of attention to making the snacks and the meals healthy and
nutritious and nut-free.”
The sports camps are offered to Timberlane members and
non-members alike, with fee structures that accommodate both groups. If you’d
